There was a very intelligent inventor in Alexandria who began to explore how air and water could be used to power mechanisms. His name was Hero. One of the many remarkable mechanisms he created was the steam engine. His device started with the heating of water in a cauldron. He could then direct the steam that was produced through a tube and into a sphere which had two pipes attached at right angles. When the sphere filled with steam, it would begin to rotate. This invention really proves how Greek engineering was way ahead of its time. The steam engine, unfortunately, could not be put to much use because the rest of the world could not quite grasp the technology and concept. It was not until a long time in the future that the concept truly was put to use.
Below is a video displaying Hero's concept of how to use steam power.
