All modern light houses are believed to have been based on the light house of Alexandria. It was the first of its kind and stood tall and proud on the Mediterranean coast for 1,600 years. The lighthouse itself played an important role in guiding the sea traffic into the bay. It was a 384 foot high beacon compromised of 3 parts. First off, there was the foundation, next was the square shaped column that stood above the foundation, and lastly the octagonal piece on the very top. The light is believed to have been from a fire burning at the top, which was magnified during the day using a mirror of some sort. The fire was most likely fueled by wood, which was continuously supplied by goats. The goats would travel up a winding circular ramp that twisted up through the middle component of the structure. The lighthouse of Alexandria was clearly one of a kind and had a positive affect on the trade in Alexandria and civilizations around the world. It was just yet another great Greek engineering feat which definitely deserved its place as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
